Time and again, it is shockingly beautiful, and I can think of nothing in recent films so ravishing as his strange romantic vision of the city, the river, the softly lighted tourist boats in the night.

Bresson's rarely screened Four Nights of a Dreamer follows the wandering Jacques, who has a chance encounter with a stranger named Marthe on the Pont-Neuf in Paris as she contemplates suicide in a moment of desperation. Over four nights, Marthe recounts her troubles to the smitten Jacques through a series of dreamlike flashbacks.

After decades away from the silver screen, Robert Bresson's film is finally back in a newly restored 4K version. Considered the French master's most accessible and personal work, this poetic and dreamy exploration of love and fantasy is based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's short story White Nights.

Filmography: Money (1983), Mouchette (1967), Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), A Man Escaped (1956), Diary of a Country Priest (1951), Les dames du Bois de Boulogne (1945).
