Karlovy Vary 2024 - Directing Award

Young fencer Jie aspires to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Han. Han, a three-time national champion, killed an opponent with a broken blade. Despite claiming that it was an accident, Han ended up in juvenile prison. When Han is granted early release, Jie looks forward to reconnecting and, soon, Han is playing mentor by honing Jie’s fencing skills. But Jie soon begins to wonder whether the unshakeable faith he puts in his brother is justified.

Pierce is the feature debut of Nelicia Low, herself a former national fencer. Low tells a gripping story in a coolly stylish fashion and uses the noble sport as a metaphor for brotherly love.
