In the summer of 1900, Switzerland, 17-year-old Elisabeth is about to take her vows when the sudden death of her older sister forces her to leave the convent and return to the family farm. Stifled by the suffocating and strict rules of the village, and obsessed with the mysteries surrounding her sister's disappearance, Elisabeth is slowly driven to rebel against the local order.
Thunder, the assured feature debut from Carmen Jaquier, is a historical coming-of-age story that explores complex themes around desire, faith, and female sexuality. Beautifully shot and atmospheric, the film is partly inspired by the diaries of the filmmaker's great-grandmother.
