12-year-old Bailey lives with her single dad, Bug, and brother, Hunter, in a graffiti-covered squat in North Kent. Bug doesn’t have much time for his kids and is about to remarry, leaving Bailey, who is approaching puberty, to seek attention and adventure elsewhere.

British auteur Andrea Arnold returns to familiar territory—the council estates of small-town Britain—with Bird, an uplifting coming-of-age drama that premiered at Cannes this year. Newcomer Nykiya Adams shines in this otherworldly kitchen-sink story of a young girl who forms a bond with a peculiar stranger.

Filmography: American Honey (2016), Wuthering Heights (2011), Fish Tank (2009), Red Road (2006).
