Lili d’Alengy, a famous Parisian darling, has a shameful secret – a daughter with a disability, Tina, whom she needs to hide in order to protect her career. She decides to leave Paris for Rome. Unwilling and unable to care for Tina, Lili seeks help from Maria Montessori, a doctor who is developing a teaching method for children labeled as ‘idiotic’. But Maria too has a secret – a child born out of wedlock. Soon she is forced to choose between her career and her child. The two women will help each other earn their place in a man’s world, and make History.
“Léa Todorov sheds light upon the genesis of the Montessori approach in a bold and novelistic first feature film about disability, difference and feminism at the beginning of the 20th century” (Cineuropa).
