In 1915, Andrea and Nicola - two Italian brothers, skilled in the restoration of cathedrals - leave their native country in search of wealth in America. Their search ultimately leads them to Hollywood, where they design sets for the films of D.W. Griffith. Then tragedy and war tear them apart.
Ten years after winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Padre padrone, the Taviani brothers were invited to Hollywood. They were inspired by the true story of three (two, for the film) Italian craftsmen who worked for D.W. Griffith. The directors explore their favorite themes of family and fate, creating a unique tribute to the pioneers of the early days of cinematic wonder.
