In 1870, during the societal tumult that eventually led to the unification of Italy, revolutionary anarchist Giulio Manieri leads a minor uprising in a small town, with tragic consequences.
The Taviani brothers adapted Tolstoy’s story The Divine and the Human, moving the action from Tsarist Russia to a small town in central Italy. The result is a rich period meditation, both fable-like and realistically grounded, using the past as a prism to reflect upon the complex factionalism of 1970s Italian politics. Giulio Brogi delivers a powerful performance in the starring role, with the film presented here in a new 4K restoration.
