In 1798 Bonaparte sets out to conquer Egypt. General Caffarelli, who accompanies Bonaparte, is far more interested in discovering this country and its spirit than in military pursuits. A scientist and a humanist, Caffarelli befriends two Egyptian brothers, and ultimately takes their side in resistance to the Bonapartist oppression.
Youssef Chahine unfolds the story of General Caffarelli against the origins of the modern state of Egypt and its perpetual struggle for independence. The film was originally presented in the 1985 Cannes Festival and returned to the festival this year in a newly restored version.
