It is summer in the tiny lakeside villages in the Arkhangelsk region of northern Russia and people go about their lives, adhering to age-old traditions. Our guide is Lyokha the postman, unmarried at 60 but still hopeful, as he runs his speedboat to pick up mail from the mainland and then deliver it to his far-flung customers.
This affectionate and melancholy portrait of a vanishing culture won the Best Director Award at the 2014 Venice Festival.
Filmography: The Inner Circle (1991), Tango & Cash (1989), Shy People (1987), Duet for One (1986), Runaway Train (1985), Maria's Lovers (1984), Sibiriada (1978), Uncle Vanya (1970).
