From India, the land of the world’s largest film industry, where formula reigns in commercial cinema, comes ultra-indie Sexy Durga, the anti-genre road movie film that defies every other rule in cinema. This no-budget experiment by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan has no written dialogue, and had no pre-existing story, just a situation in the region of Kerala where a vulnerable young couple encounters the wrong criminals. The film’s other experiment is to shoot almost everything at night, raising the logistical bar and heightening the ambiguity and the drama.
This winner of the top prize at the 2017 Rotterdam International Film Festival introduces Israel to this director, who is making a cinema that couldn’t be more different from Bollywood.
Filmography: Ozhivudivasathe Kali (2015), Oraalppokkam (2014).
The film contains scenes of a disturbing nature.
