In Fairytale, celebrated Russian auteur Alexander Sokurov continues the complicated relationship with dictators that has marked his films, from Moloch to The Sun. This time Sokurov re-imagines a situation in which four men, historical figures on opposite sides during WWII, try to get through God's Gate guarded by their imperial predecessor. The four are Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Josef Stalin and Winston Churchill, while the “gatekeeper” is Napoleon Bonaparte himself (Jesus makes an appearance as well).
The dictators all appear as themselves as they meander through a purgatory of ghostly archive footage, an experimental deepfake feature, a visually stunning, innovative, black-and-white film that finds Sokurov at his mischievous best.
