As far as they can remember, the Solé family have spent every summer harvesting peaches in their orchard in Alcarràs, a small village in Catalonia. Their landlords, the wealthy Pinyol family, gifted them the land in gratitude for saving their lives during the Spanish Civil War. But this year’s crop could be their last, as they face eviction and the peach trees are about the make way to solar panels.
Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 2022 Berlin Festival, Alcarràs is a vibrant, moving and nuanced family drama. Carla Simón uses the farm in crisis to reflect on identity, family and our relationship to the land that feeds us.
