Angola. Three generations of war-stricken women find their lives and loves caught up and torn apart by Angola’s seemingly endless civil war. When Yara was two years old, her mother Nayola went in search of her husband, who had disappeared at the height of the war. Years later, the country is finally at peace, but Nayola has not returned. Yara becomes a rebellious teenager, a subversive rap singer.
The stunning animation debut from José Miguel Ribeiro combines a forceful message with a powerful and eclectic animation. Nayola washes the screen in warm tropical tones that blend elements of reality and fantasy and work beautifully well with the vital and complex music.
