Casablanca, Morocco. A trio of women, with the police on their tail, embarks on a long escape that takes them across the rugged red terrain and flower-filled valleys of the Atlas to finally reach the Atlantic coast.
Queens, the feature debut of Moroccan-born filmmaker Yasmine Benkiran, comes to Haifa from the Venice festival, where it closed the Semaine de la Critique section. Benkiran combines genre cinema that derives from local mythology and creates an adventurous film that celebrates disobedience and the power of imagination. The gorgeous cinematography is courtesy of esteemed cinematographer Pierre Aïm, who recently shot Boy from Heaven by Tarik Saleh, also screened in our program.
